Living Room Series
With inaugural guest, Choreographer
Mandy Moore
CI Dance Studies is excited to launch the Living Room Sessions with inaugural guest Mandy Moore. The Living Room Session brings influential guests in the field of dance to discuss the wonderful complexity of a life in dance. Mandy Moore is the most successful and artistically acclaimed commercial choreographer of our time. She most recently choreographed Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the largest grossing tour for a woman, and second largest grossing tour of all time. You may have seen her choreography in movies such as La La Land, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, Did You hear About The Morgans?, and Sleeping With Other People. Mandy is currently the producer and choreographer for NBC’s new hit series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. She is also a choreographer, producer, and guest judge for ABC’s long running television show Dancing With The Stars. In addition, her television work includes So You Think You Can Dance , FOX’s Glee and American Idol; Nickelodeon’s The Fresh Beat Band; Disney’s 60th Anniversary Celebration on ABC, and Modern Family. In 2017 she made history by being the first person to choreograph for the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, ACADEMY AWARDS, the GRAMMY AWARDS, and EMMY AWARDS in the same year. We are excited to sit down in our “living room,” Malibu Hall 120 to talk about the creative process, collaboration, and the importance of dance in our world.

Spring 2023 Ballet Nepantla Guest Performance

Ballet Nepantla will perform “Valentina” on Thursday, April 13, at 6 p.m. in Oxnard College Performing Arts Building. The master class for Dance Studies majors at CSUCI and Oxnard College students will be held the morning of April 13 at the university in Camarillo
Ballet Nepantla originated from a series of pláticas between founders Andrea Guajardo and Martín Rodríguez, two artists whose early professional identities emerged from distinct genres: Andrea from classical ballet and contemporary dance, and Martin from traditional Mexican folklórico. They envisioned a new form of expression that fused the two modalities, and they envisioned an aesthetic that would speak to the historical, cultural, and social realities of a broader narrative of being Mexican, Mexican American, immigrant, and trans-cultural.

Michelle Dorrance Visiting Guest Artist

Michelle Dorrance is a New York City-based artist. Mentored by Gene Medler (North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble), she was fortunate to study under many of the last master hoofers. Career highlights include:STOMP, Derick Grant’s Imagine Tap!, Jason Samuels Smith’s Charlie’s Angels/Chasing the Bird , Ayodele Casel’s Diary of a Tap Dancer, Mable Lee’s Dancing Ladies, and playing the bass for Darwin Deez. Company work includes: Savion Glover’s Ti Dii, Manhattan Tap, Barbara Duffy and Co., JazzTap Ensemble, and Rumba Tap. Solo work ranges from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to commissions for the Martha Graham Dance Company, Vail Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre, and New York City Center. Michelle made her Broadway choreographic debut with James Lapine’s Flying Over Sunset at Lincoln Center Theater in 2021. A 2018 Doris Duke Artist, 2017 Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow, and 2015 MacArthur Fellow, Dorrance is humbled to have been acknowledged and supported by United StatesArtists, The Joyce Theater, the Alpert Awards, Jacob’s Pillow, Princess Grace Foundation-USA, The Field, American Tap Dance Foundation, and the Bessie Awards. Dorrance holds a B.A. from New York University and is a Capezio Athlete.

a virtual hip hop dance listening cypher
Professor Park is a guest co-editor with Dr. grace shinhae jun of a fully online edition of the Dance Studies Association publication Conversations Across the Field of Dance Studies . The issue is titled “The Cyber-Rock Mixtape: a virtual hip hop dance listening cypher” and features conversations between hip hop dance practitioners on topics like b-girlism, teaching and transmission, Brooklyn history, Street Dance Activism, and social justice movements. Each conversation features “liner notes” by a hip hop or Black studies scholar.
